ELECTION EVE
Early polls show O'Farrell leading Echuca Wards as Shire counts votes

VOTE COUNTING for the Campaspe Shire Elections will be finalised by the end of the weekend, showing who will be elected on to council for the next 4 years.

In an exclusive poll conducted by The Crofton Street Times of over 100 people, Judith O’Farrell looks to be leading in the Echuca Ward, way out in front of current councillor Kevin Simpson.

Peter Williams and Peter Conway are also close in the poll, however Williams is just in front.

In the Kyabram Ward – which is the most heavily contested – current councillor Neil Repacholi is leading, just in front of Anne Howell.

Both Jeff Keath and Neil Pankhurst are equally last, maintaining 5 percent.

However in the Western Ward, Greg Toll can sit back and relax as he is the only candidate and will be elected without a hitch.

In the Waranga ward, Councillor Marion Riley only has one rival Neil Lumsden, whom she is beating by a massive margin.

Marion Riley has been a popular councillor for many years, and her voters do not seem to be backing away from her yet.

Garry Newman in the Rochester Ward is leading over his two rivals, Anthony Murphy and Frank Oliver by over 50 percent.

However the most interest in being focused on the Echuca Ward, with a number of ‘colourful’ candidates putting themselves up for nomination.

Crofton Street’s Peter Conway – who also lives in Melbourne – is one of the candidates, going against former councillor Peter Williams, current councillor Kevin Simpson and school teacher and social worker Judith O’Farrell.

O’Farrell is clearly the most popular of the group, telling The Crofton Street Times that she is happy by the results of the Times’ poll.

“I guess I’m delighted to know that I have people’s faith,” she said.

She said she is not nervous about the results of the election, but will accept what ever happens.

“I will be glad when the polls are decided. I’m a fairly pragmatic person… I just accept what happens,” she said.

Last weekend, O’Farrell and Conway met in Echuca while both handing out their own how-to-vote cards.

O’Farrell said they had a very “civilised” chat and that it was “good to meet each other for the first time.”

O’Farrell has a 34 year “connection” with Echuca and has worked as a social worker and teacher, giving her first hand experience with people who have been affected by the issues that matter in Echuca.

Postal voting in the Campaspe Shire elections closed last night, with votes in every ward expected to take all weekend, under the close inspection of government scrutineers.
